GIMP - Create contrast mask

  1. Create duplicate layer containing image
  2. Select the duplicate layer and Colors->Desaturate
  3. Colors->Invert
  4. Change Mode: Overlay in Layers dialog box
  5. Filters->Blur->Gaussian Blur. Set Blur Radius between 10 and 30.
