Copy Video DVDs

  1. Use MacTheRipper to rip the DVD content:
    • Set Mode = "Fill Disk Extraction"
    • Creates the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder structure in a parent directory named after the DVD's volume ID, in the target directory you specify
    • Takes about 8 minutes
  2. Use mkisofs to generate an ISO image
    • Erase the .DS_Store files in the source directories first
    • mkisofs -dvd-video -V "$volid" -o "../${volid}.iso" .<code>
    • I created the /Users/dlk/bin/dvdiso script to do all of this. Just give it the volume ID directory name, i.e., the name of the directory containing the VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders.
    • Takes about 8 minutes
  3. Burn the ISO to DVD using the Disk Utility
    • Insert a blank disk
    • Right click the ISO and select "Open with Disk Utility"
    • Click burn button
